In the space of a generation, qualitative empirical methods have moved from the margin to the mainstream in many areas of basic and applied social science. A subsequent development has been the growth of mixed methods, as the combination of quantitative and qualitative methods gains increasing acceptance. This lecture surveys these development and considers their implications for the present day training of researchers.
