The end of society? European capitalism and political critique
host: Paul Blokker (University of Trento and Charles University)
The enduring financial and economic crisis that plagues Europe has led to extensive forms of social critique, articulating increasing inequality and levels of social exclusion. Despite forceful protests, no real alternatives to wild, deregulated capitalism seem to have emerged, and many sociologists have observed a relative immunity of neoliberal capitalism to critique. It is in particular a political critique, articulating the loss of a common project, that seems to have lost important terrain. The question emerges to which extent a common project can be retrieved, which social forms such a retrieval might take, and whether the ubiquity of the market logic can be reversed.
